Main Character Energy

I’m probably the last person to hear this wording or concept, but after today, my life may just be improved having heard it.

I’ve been engaged, much of the day, with a number of conversations on LinkedIn with people who may legitimately believe that when and because they have a thought, that not only is it the universal truth, but also that EVERYONE must know it. They all happened to be men, or bots, because, let’s be real, but I’ve experienced the same with some non-men as well. Here’s an illustration of how it goes…

Me: Spit out some random opinion about a thing I notice about guys, broad generalization disclaimer preceding.

Dude: Why are you talking about “all men,” even though you never said “all” but I read it in your tone and had to complain about it and make it about me?

Me: Never said all, but you’re also proving my point.

Then ensues a smattering of increasingly boring, personal attacks, doubling down on Dude’s insistence that because my opinion happens to be different than his, that I must be taken down a notch, reminded of my place in the hierarchy…

He actually asked if I went outside of my home in my own city. Every day, I respond, to which he retorts, well then you know what I’m talking about, i.e. why you’re city sucks.

I’m like, if I thought it sucks, I’d probably leave, but clearly, yet another reason to love where I live is that it repels dingdongs like this guy. I’m sure I wouldn’t care for it where he’s from either. Certainly not something worth arguing or attempting to insult others over.

Main Character Energy.

I’m not sure if it’s a genetic trait, an astrological gift or a nutured skill; I just know it gets old quick.

These people just cannot, for their lives, see the world around them as if they aren’t there in the center of everything. As though if they passed away, a black hole would open up and the whole world would end for everyone.

It just doesn’t work like that.

So my question is, are these people beyond hope? Are they just going to be insufferable dickweeds forever, or could they be put through some rehabilitation treatment to gain some other perspective? Is there a way we could just decide, as a society, that this should be a clinical diagnosis as a medical/ psychological dysfunction, or perhaps a syndrome? A disorder…

Maybe even a disability.

Makes you think, doesn’t it?
